OEKO-TEX Vs GOTS: Certifications Every Cashmere Buyer Should Know
Publish Time: 2026-05-21 Origin: WFS Cashmere
Walk into any conversation about sustainable or responsible fashion and you'll hear certifications thrown around like buzzwords. OEKO-TEX. GOTS. BSCI. WRAP. If you're a brand buyer trying to navigate cashmere sourcing, it can feel overwhelming—and frankly, a lot of the information out there is written for auditors, not for people who just want to make better purchasing decisions.
Let's cut through that. This is what you actually need to know about the certifications that matter most in the cashmere supply chain.
Why Certifications Exist in the First Place
Before we get into the specifics, let's talk about why this matters. Cashmere goes through a surprisingly long journey: raw fiber collection, cleaning, spinning, dyeing, knitting or weaving, finishing, and finally garment construction. At almost every one of these stages, chemicals can be introduced—and some of those chemicals are harmful to human health.
Certifications exist to create accountability. They turn vague promises like "we care about quality" into verifiable standards that any third party can check.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: The "End Product" Test
What it covers: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished product for harmful substances. That means the sweater, scarf, or blanket that's ready to ship gets tested in a laboratory to confirm it doesn't contain levels of chemicals that could be harmful to human health—things like carcinogenic dyes, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and pesticides.
What it doesn't cover: The manufacturing process itself. OEKO-TEX is focused entirely on the end product, not how it was made, what the working conditions are like, or whether the dyes used in processing were environmentally responsible.
Who it's right for: Brands whose customers care most about wearing safe, non-toxic clothing next to their skin. It's the most widely recognized textile safety certification in the world, and it carries real weight with European and American consumers.
Our certification: At WFS Cashmere, we hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100, so every piece we produce for our clients comes with this certification. It's a baseline standard we don't compromise on.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): The "Entire Supply Chain" Standard
What it covers: GOTS is more comprehensive than OEKO-TEX in one critical way—it governs the entire supply chain, not just the finished product. For a textile to carry the GOTS label, the organic fibers must be grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, all processing stages must meet strict environmental standards, and the social criteria (like fair wages and safe working conditions) must be verified.
What it doesn't cover: GOTS is specifically for organic fibers. So "GOTS-certified cashmere" means the goat's undercoat was sourced from animals that meet organic farming standards—and those standards, notably, are still evolving for nomadic goat herding contexts.
Who it's right for: Brands with a strong sustainability narrative, those targeting the green consumer segment, or retailers with formal ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) requirements. GOTS certification also helps with regulatory compliance in markets like the EU, which is increasingly tightening textile chemical standards.
BSCI and SEDEX (SMETA): The Social Compliance Layer
These are different from product safety certifications. BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) and SEDEX, with its SMETA audit, focus entirely on social and ethical compliance at the manufacturing level.
What they check:
Working hours and wages
Health and safety conditions
Child labor and forced labor prohibitions
Management practices and worker representation
Why they matter: Many European and American retailers won't work with a manufacturer without BSCI or SEDEX certification. These are de facto requirements for entering certain supply chains. We hold both BSCI and SEDEX certifications, and frankly, we believe in them—not just because our clients require them, but because they're the right way to run a factory.
WRAP and ISO 9001: Additional Layers of Trust
WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) is another social compliance certification focused on ethical manufacturing. ISO 9001 is a quality management standard that ensures a manufacturer has consistent processes in place to deliver quality products.
Together with BSCI and SEDEX, these certifications signal to international brands that a factory operates at globally recognized standards—not just locally.
The Honest Comparison Table
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | GOTS | |
Focus | Product safety | Full supply chain + organic fiber |
Process conditions | Not covered | Covered |
Fiber organic status | Not required | Required |
Worker welfare | Not covered | Covered |
Most relevant for | Skin-safe garments | Sustainability-focused brands |
Price premium | Lower | Higher |
What We Recommend to Brands Starting Out
Here's our practical advice based on years of working with international buyers:
Start with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and BSCI or SEDEX. These two certifications together give you a credible, cost-effective foundation. OEKO-TEX addresses your customer's concern ("Is this safe to wear?"), and BSCI/SEDEX addresses your retailer's concern ("Is this factory ethically run?").
Add GOTS if sustainability is central to your brand story. If your brand was built on organic or eco-friendly positioning, GOTS gives you the documentation to back that up. But be prepared—this certification adds cost and complexity to your supply chain.
Don't treat certifications as marketing filler. We've seen brands list certifications on their website without actually having them applied to their products. Retailers and consumers are getting smarter about this. If you claim a product is OEKO-TEX certified, that product needs to actually be tested and certified.
How We Handle Certification for Our Clients
At WFS Cashmere, we manage the certification process as part of our standard OEM/ODM service. When you place an order with us, we apply our existing certifications to your production run—BSCI, SEDEX, OEKO-TEX, GOTS, WRAP, and ISO 9001. You don't need to start from scratch.
For brands with specific certification requirements—say, a retailer that requires GOTS-certified cashmere—we walk through the sourcing, production, and documentation process step by step.
